Federal Agents Search Ilhan Omar’s Home Amid Fraud Probe

Federal agents executed a search of Representative Ilhan Omar’s residence in Washington DC on Monday morning, sparking immediate condemnation from House Democratic leadership and civil rights organizations. The raid marks an escalation in the Trump administration’s enforcement actions against political opponents, according to critics who describe the move as a weaponization of federal law enforcement agencies.

The search is connected to a criminal fraud investigation regarding immigration paperwork filed when Omar was a child. Her late father completed the documents at that time. Fox News reported the scope of the inquiry, which has drawn sharp rebukes from Democrats who argue the Justice Department and Homeland Security are overstepping their authority.

Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark, and Pete Aguilar issued a joint statement denouncing the action. They characterized the raid as “deeply disturbing” and evidence of the administration’s “corrupt weaponization” of government resources against adversaries. The leaders pledged to pursue accountability for what they termed a “rogue abuse of power.”

Representative Ro Khanna argued the search targets Muslim Americans specifically. He stated, “It is simply chilling that they are targeting political opponents this way, and it is disturbing that they are targeting Muslim Americans and a Muslim American legislator.” Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove called the event “fascism in the extreme,” while Representative Pramila Jayapal labeled it a “disgusting abuse of power” by an “out of control president.”

Jayapal linked the raid to broader political pressures, citing President Trump’s unpopularity over high living costs and the war in Iran that began alongside Israel in February. With less than 30 days remaining until the November 3 midterm elections, Representative Greg Casar suggested the administration is targeting Omar to benefit Republican candidates.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned the raid as political persecution. The organization criticized the Justice Department for focusing on what it called a “witch hunt” rather than addressing other matters, such as the handling of Jeffrey Epstein’s child sex-trafficking network files and pardons issued to those who attacked the US Capitol in early 2021.

Representative Delia C Ramirez went further, calling for the dismantling of the Department of Homeland Security. The incident has intensified debates over executive power and the boundaries of federal investigations into elected officials. Omar spoke with Congressional Progressive caucus members Maxwell Frost, Pramila Jayapal, and Chuy Garcia on January 13 in Washington DC.
