A Trump-backed Republican secured the Oklahoma GOP gubernatorial nomination Tuesday, delivering a significant win for the president’s political operation and setting the stage for a fall general election in one of the nation’s most reliably red states.
What Happened
Former state Sen. Mike Mazzei defeated sitting Attorney General Gentner Drummond in the Republican primary runoff for governor of Oklahoma. The contest was forced after Drummond edged Mazzei by just 0.3 percentage points in the first round of voting on June 16, an outcome close enough to make a decisive runoff all but certain.
President Trump had endorsed Mazzei in May, and that backing was reinforced in the runoff stretch when Gov. Kevin Stitt added his support. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who spent 13 years representing Oklahoma in Congress before joining the Trump Cabinet, also came out for Mazzei ahead of Tuesday’s vote.

The race drew serious money on both sides. Mazzei loaned his own campaign $11.6 million, more than triple the $3 million Drummond put in from his personal funds. The Club for Growth added another $8 million in television advertising on Mazzei’s behalf, making the runoff a costly affair by Oklahoma standards. Trump carried Oklahoma by 34 points in 2024, a margin that underscores just how dominant Republican candidates expect to be in November.
Who Is Mike Mazzei
Mazzei served 12 years in the Oklahoma state senate before reaching his term limit in 2016. He later joined the Stitt administration as budget secretary in 2019, a position he held for one year. The combination of legislative experience, executive branch service, and high-profile endorsements gave him a credible profile heading into the runoff, even after narrowly trailing Drummond in the first round.
The Road to November
Mazzei’s general election opponent will be Democratic state Rep. Cyndi Munson. Given the state’s deep-red lean, the Republican nomination is widely considered the decisive contest. Oklahoma has not elected a Democratic governor since Brad Henry left office in 2011, and Trump’s massive 34-point margin there in 2024 offers little reason to expect a competitive general election.
The result is a clean win for the Trump political machine in a state where the president’s endorsement clearly carries weight. Drummond, as the sitting attorney general, represented the kind of established Republican figure that Trump-aligned conservatives have frequently sought to displace in contested primaries. With Mazzei now the nominee, Oklahoma’s next governor is almost certain to be someone who entered the race with the former president’s explicit backing and the support of the state’s current executive leadership.
The race also reflects the broader pattern of well-funded outside groups shaping Republican primaries. The Club for Growth’s $8 million television campaign for Mazzei demonstrated again how national conservative organizations are willing to invest heavily in state-level contests when the ideological stakes, or the alignment with a preferred presidential candidate, make it worthwhile.
